Australia's Rex is offering A$49 Sydney–Melbourne tickets, considerably cheaper than competitor Qantas at A$109. Rex's business class tickets will cost A$199.

Virgin immediately matched the Rex offer, cutting its 'from A$78' fares to A$49. 

 

Rex initially will operate nine return services a day between the two cities from 1 March using B737 metal.
