Lufthansa to join SAF surcharge brigade

Germany's Lufthansa Group is to introduce a ticketing surcharge from January 1, 2025 to help cover the cost of new regulations designed to force the use of more expensive sustainable fuels (SAFs).

The surcharge will cost from EUR1-EUR72 and will apply to all departures from the European Union, the UK, Norway and Switzerland. The exact amount charged will depend on the route and fare.

The new rules say airlines must use at least two per cent SAFs from next year and airlines including Lufthansa and Air France-KLM are surcharging fares to soften the impact.
