Scotland's announcement on departure tax draws swift response

UK airport bosses have urged the London-based government to take action to protect jobs and investment in the North East of England after the Scottish government confirmed plans to half air passenger duty north of the border by 2021, with reductions beginning in April 2018.

The announcement has prompted airports within striking distance of Scotland to claim that passengers might choose to fly from, say, airports such as Edinburgh and Glasgow rather than Newcastle.

Newcastle Airport said that the Scottish announcement meant it was now essential for the UK government to set out its plans.
