PCB to challenge 28pc budget cut

The Western Australia government has cut funding* to the Perth Convention Bureau's (PCB's) Business Events Marketing and Promotional Services Agreement with Tourism Western Australia (TWA) for the financial years 2016/17 to 2018/2019 by 28 per cent.

In its response to the news, PCB said:

- In the last financial year, PCB secured direct delegate expenditure of A$107.9 million, equal to 104 per cent of its target of A$104 million and this year is on track to better its A$106 million target.

- PCB is one of the highest-performing convention bureaux in Australia with a return-on-investment to the WA State government of 31:1 -  double that of its east coast capital city bureau competitors.

- PCB has almost doubled its co-operative funding and activities with the tourism industry over the last four years.
- A lower level of funding for PCB makes the task of increasing WA market share extremely difficult.

- In view of the increased convention space that will accompany the new hotels both under construction and proposed for Perth, this is not the time for the Government to be cutting back on marketing Western Australia as a Business Events destination.

- PCB will challenge the funding cuts in the hope that the current level of funding is reinstated for the post 2019 contract period.

*PCB is funded by the West Australian government through Tourism WA and by the City of Perth.
