Meranti hits China, Taiwan braces for Malakas

Typhoon Meranti has hammered south-eastern China, cutting power, ripping up trees and smashing windows a day after lashing Taiwan.

There were no reports of any early China casualties.

Xinhua news said the storm was the most powerful to hit Fujian province in at least 67 years, while Xiamen's utility providers said power outages impacted most of the city, which is home to some 3.5 million people.

Train services were disrupted throughout Fujian as well as in neighbouring Jiangxi province.

in Taiwan, meanwhile, Meranti left a 58-year-old fisherman dead and 38 injured.

Thousands were forced to flee their homes and at the peak of the storm, more than one million households lost power.

Another tropical storm, typhoon Malakas, is forecast to sweep past the east coast of the island on Saturday.
