Airbnb lodges connectivity device patent

Lodgings firm Airbnb is working on a 'beam modem' device that would allow travellers to 'pre-load' information about the destinations they're going to visit on personal electronic devices (PEDs) and then 'update' the info with incremental data even if they are in areas with no internet or cell services.
According to its patent application, its device will help offline travellers by downloading lightweight, essential information such as maps and messages.

Airbnb’s 'beam device' would involve three parts — a 'personal client device' such as a smartphone or a computer, the beam modem device and a beam API server.

The patent describes how those three things would work in concert to provide trip data updates.
