Asia's tourism recovery still slow

As Europe's post-Covid tourism figures power ahead, Asia saw only 233 million international tourists last year, about 35 per cent less than in 2019.

Northeast Asian arrivals including to China, South Korea and Japan remain 45 per cent less than in 2019, and for Southeast Asia, are still down by nearly 30 per cent.

The former UN world tourism organisation (UNWTO, now UN Tourism) says its forecast of a full recovery this year is “subject to the pace of recovery in Asia and to the evolution of existing economic and geopolitical challenges”.

It also says “tourists are expected increasingly to seek value for money and travel closer to home in response to elevated prices and the overall economic challenges”.
