Spirit delays fleet deliveries, will furlough 260 pilots

Florida, USA-based budget airline Spirit is responding to Pratt & Whitney engine supply problems and its own liquidity issues by delaying fleet expansion plans and furloughing about 260 pilots.

An agreement with Airbus will defer scheduled 2025-26 deliveries until 2030-2031.

Spirit’s president and ceo Ted Christie said deferring the deliveries "gives us the opportunity to reset the business and focus on the core airline while we adjust to changes in the competitive environment”.

The deferrals "protect team members, while balancing our responsibility to return to positive cash-flow and thrive as a healthy company with long-term growth prospects,” Christie continued.

The airline has lost money for the past six quarters despite booming travel demand.
