Boeing says safety/quality system 'hits' are up 500pc

Use of 'Speak Up', an internal service at US plane maker Boeing that enables employees to raise safety and quality concerns, has “exploded” this year, the Guardian reports.

The number of employees using the service was up 500 per cent in Q1, after the company heavily promoted it following an incident aboard an Alaska Airlines flight earlier this year that saw a door 'plug' blow out.

Submissions to Speak Up in January and February 2024 alone equalled “the entire 2023 year”, Boeing says.

Travel costs revised

Meanwhile, Boeing admits it spent US$500,000 more than previously disclosed on personal private jet trips for four top executives including ceo Dave Calhoun, who announced last month that he will leave the company by the end of the year.

The other executives were cfo Brian West, Stan Deal (who was ceo of the commercial airplane unit) and Theodore Colbert, the ceo of its defence, space and security business.

The cost of personal air travel for Calhoun alone totalled US$979,000 during the three years being reported.
