Air India strike hits thousands

A one-day strike at India's loss-hit state-run carrier Air India was prompted in part because the airline cracked down on employees making negative statements about the company to the media.

At least 13,500 passengers were affected as about 135 round-trip flights were cancelled on Wednesday.

India's Civil Aviation minister Praful Patel has told parliament Air India's losses could run into US$1.1 billion for 2009-10.

"The trend of losses is likely to continue for few more years," he said.
