Ash slows airline recovery

International passenger traffic fell 2.4 per cent in April due to the volcanic ash cloud from Iceland.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) says the ash crisis knocked back the industry's global recovery and impacted carriers in all regions.

IATA ceo Giovanni Bisignani said: "In March, we were within one per cent of 2008 pre-crisis traffic levels. In April, that was pushed back to seven per cent."

European carrier traffic dropped 11.7 per cent in April and Asia-Pacific airlines saw traffic growth slow to 3.5 per cent from 12.9 per cent in March.
