Malaysia's AirAsia says it cancelled flights across nine airports due to the volcanic eruption of Mount Ruang in the Indonesian Sulawesi Islands.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) issued a safety advisory on the problem, describing it as a serious threat to aircraft safety and airline passengers.

AirAsia flights to and from Kota Kinabalu, Tawau, Sandakan, Labuan, Miri, Sibu, Bintulu, Kuching and Brunei were affected.
Airlines continue to monitor the situation.
