Operators ready for Q4 demand surge

Operators are adopting a range of workaround schemes to offset a predicted shortage of widebody freighter aircraft in the fourth quarter of the year, according to Pierre van der Stichele, vp cargo at charter broker Air Partner.

Traditional routes will experience a more pronounced peak season and e-commerce is increasing, with Alibaba, Shein, Temu and Amazon “taking a big chunk of the capacity that’s available on the market”.

He said this has led to space shortages on 777Fs, 747Fs, A330Fs and 767Fs, particularly on Asia-Pacific runs and smart airlines would reserve freighter capacity closer to Q4 and then release it at premium rates.

“The timing is very important, but it’s a risk some carriers are willing to take in the peak season in the run-up to Christmas,” he said.
