Air freight emissions 25pc higher since 2019 - report

Air freight operators' greenhouse gas emissions are up by 25 per cent compared with 2019, according to a report by campaign group Stand.earth, which says it counted about 300,000 more flights last year than in 2019.

The US accounted for more than 40 per cent of all global air freight emissions and three operators - FedEx, UPS and Amazon Air - generated more than 27 per cent of that country's emissions.

Stand.Earth also said air freighter firms have added more than 750 planes to their fleets while operating out of 300 additional airports since 2019.
Air freight produces an estimated 80 times more carbon than shipping by sea or truck, making it one of the most carbon-intensive transportation methods.
