US port congestion is helping airfreight - 'for now'

The current boost in airfreight activity, higher prices and improved yields on flights from Asia to the US are a temporary improvement, Drewry Shipping Consultants says.

The firm believes the move from seafreight to air is an attempt by importers to offset congestion at US West Coast ports in the runup to Xmas.

Drewry says it expects air freight rates will show rises into December, with tighter capacity supporting stronger pricing over certain trades.

US retailers say the problems at sea ports have forced them to make costly, last-minute switches to air, with women’s clothing retailer Ann Taylor estimating the additional cost at US$5 million.
