May e-commerce demand drives volumes up 12pc

E-commerce demand on routes from China to North America pushed global air cargo volumes up 12 per cent year over year in May, according to Xeneta, which says rising costs and longer transit times could trim consumer demand.

However, Xeneta chief airfreight officer Niall van de Wouw said that for now, shippers still expect growth to continue, maintaining pressure on the market.

“When we take a mid-term view of the market, with these kinds of numbers, we might be on track for double-digit growth for the year. It is now a possible scenario,” he said.
