The Singapore government's Competition Commission has approved the proposed Virgin Australia and Singapore Airlines (SIA) alliance.

Virgin Australia ceo John Borghetti said: "Singapore Airlines is widely regarded as one of the best airlines in the world and, following the recent re-positioning of our brand and the introduction of our new business and economy class product, Virgin Australia is a well-suited partner."

The Singapore okay is a strong pointer for a final okay in Australia, where the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has granted draft approval for the deal ahead of a final decision.
