The Dubai government's Civil Aviation Authority says the United Parcel Service (UPS) plane crash last year was caused by a fire in cargo that included lithium batteries that weren't declared as hazardous cargo.  Air shipments of this type of battery already is the focus of a lobbying dispute in Washington, USA.

EC sets environmental targets for airlines

The European Commission's White Paper on transport has set out broad environmental targets for 2050 with Sandro Santamato, head of the Commission's alternative fuel policy unit saying "CO2 emissions from aviation will decrease by about 34 per cent between 2005 and 2050", partly due to second and third generation biofuels available from 2035.
