Troubled US carrier Kitty Hawk has failed to find a new source of financing or a buyer and has been forced to shut down all scheduled network air and ground operations. The decision means around 500 employees will lose their jobs. Kitty Hawk will continue to operate air cargo charter operations.

Fuel surcharges hit profit forecasts

Asian airline operators whose fuel surcharge levels are set by their governments may see profits fall by 5 per cent because of the 25 per cent hike in jet fuel costs (by nearly US$30 a barrel) over the past three months, according to Merrill Lynch. The analyst said airlines in China, Hong Kong, Korea and Taiwan were vulnerable to fuel price rises because their surcharges tend to be low compared to operators in other markets such as Australia. -JH

DHL breaks ground in Korea

Logistics giant DHL has broken ground on its new US$50 million hub facility at Korea’s  Incheon International Airport. When completed at the end of next year, it will be more than five times larger than the current DHL Express facility and will serve as a hub, consolidation and distribution centre for Korea and markets including Mongolia, Guam, Saipan, and the Russian Far East.-JH

Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA) announced today that it will suspend its twice-weekly services out of Darwin with effect from 26 January 2008. Prior to this, the airline will revise and suspend selected flights from Darwin with immediate effect.
