Airbus tips more Asian A380 orders

Some of Singapore Airlines’ 19 B747 aircraft will be converted to freighter planes for use by its air cargo business as its 19 Airbus 380 are delivered, according to SIA’s Bey Soo Khiang. Airbus says it expects to receive further orders for the A380 by mid 2008 from Air India and Air China. -JH

Air France, Delta sign JV

Air France is to hand over three London airport slots to Delta Air Lines as part of a joint venture passenger and cargo agreement valid till 2016 to share costs and revenues on trans-Atlantic routes. The deal, from April 2008, initially covers non-stop Air France and Delta flights between Paris-CDG, Orly, and Lyon in France and Atlanta, New York-JFK, Cincinnati and Salt Lake City in the US plus flights between London-Heathrow and the USA. More routes will be added later.

DHL adds 58 per cent capacity

DHL will fly Hong Kong-Beijing 10 times a week using a B727-200 freighter. The aircraft can handle 24 tonnes of cargo, effectively adding 58 per cent to the company’s current route capacity. According to China's Ministry of Commerce, 2006 two-way trade figures between the countries rose 21.6 per cent to US$166.2 billion. -JH

The US senate has been told that the Department of Homeland Security has made air travel more secure, but has not yet implemented all recommended improvements in screening passengers and air cargo.
Although it has made progress in inspecting checked baggage and securing some mass transit systems, the Transportation Security Administration currently lacks the technology to detect explosives on passengers’ carry-on baggage and foreign cargo travelling on passenger planes, according to the Government Accountability Office.

Air Canada charging for slow returns

Air Canada has begun charging customers who damage its pallets and containers. It also is charging forwarders and shippers who do not return ULDs (unit load devices) within five days, between US$6 and US$75 per item per day. Severely damaged ULD charges range from US$15 for missing or damaged straps to US$1,080-US$2,160 for lost containers. -JH

EU Customs to drop shipping controls?

The European Commission wants to abolish Customs controls on cargo moved by sea within its market, putting sea freight on the same footing as road freight. Ships are believed to carry 40 per cent of internal EU trade (measured by tonne kilometres).
