Following last month's announcement that talks were under way, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has taken a majority stake in Milan-based carrier AlisCargo Airlines and is headed for 100 per cent ownership of the Italian cargo airline in 2024.

Shippers will hold the upper hand in the next round of winter airfreight rates negotiations after another month of falling demand in July saw volumes drop two per cent month-over-month, and the general global air freight spot rate decline at 40 per cent or more for a fourth consecutive month, according to the latest weekly market analysis by Clive Data Services, part of Xeneta.

Still smarting from Australia's decision to block expansion of flights there, Qatar Airways is promoting its air cargo record, saying it transported more than 1,541,041 tonnes of air freight globally between April 2022 and March 2023, giving it an 8.1 per cent market share.

Korean Air has joined the list of major carriers detailing cargo losses, saying revenue in the second quarter plunged 56 per cent to US$748.8 million, although total group revenue grew to US$2.7 billion.

Avion Express details expansion plans

Avion Express, an ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance) and charter airline, has expanded its fleet to 50 aircraft. 
Darius Kajokas, ceo Avion Express said the airline plans to continue growing its fleet.
"By the end of next year, we plan to have 60 aircraft and expect to reach a fleet of 100 aircraft by the end of 2027."
