European aviation network exceeds 30,000 a day

For the first time in 2024, the European aviation network has exceeded 30K average daily flights, according to the latest EuroControl European Aviation review.

Week 19’s 30,647 average daily flights puts the network at 98 per cent of pre-pandemic levels overall, and well over that in certain parts.

Overall traffic now is five per cent more than the same period in 2023, and 2.3 per cent over the previous week’s average.

Network punctuality compared to the equivalent week in 2023 is 5.4 percentage points higher, with 78.7 per cent of flights arriving on time, despite some weather disruptions (mainly strong winds, cumulonimbus clouds and low visibility) that particularly affected flights towards the end of the week on the south-east axis as well as over France.

Within overall delays, en-route ATFM delays were 42 percent higher than the previous week, with a daily average of around 41K minutes. Convective weather only accounted for just over a third of this, with almost two-thirds down to capacity/staffing issues

Other key data in this edition:

  • At country level, the top 10 states together recorded a 3.1 per cent increase in the number of flights compared to the previous week.
  • On average, the top 10 carriers deployed the same capacities (+0.1 per cent) as they did in Week 18.
  • All top 10 airports are handling more flights than in 2023, with increases ranging from +1 per cent (iGA Istanbul/Paris CDG) to +24 per cent (Rome Fiumicino), while 5/10 (iGA Istanbul, Palma de Mallorca; Rome Fiumicino, Barcelona and London Heathrow) currently are handling traffic similar to or above their 2019 levels.
  • The average jet fuel price in Europe reached US$2.46/gallon on 10 May 2024 (-2 per cent over two weeks).
