Airbus to test hydrogen cell on A380

Europe's Airbus plans to test its ‘iron pad’ hydrogen fuel cell system on an Airbus A380 ZEROe test bed, part of the ZEROe project to develop a sustainable fuel system under the company’s zero-emission initiative.

Currently, the fuel cell system can achieve a total power output of 1.2 megawatts and after hundreds of hours of tests, the ZEROe project team says its hydrogen-powered engine is ready for real-world scenarios.

If all goes according to plan, Airbus hopes to fly several hydrogen-powered aircraft by the mid-2030s.
