Perth Airport to be Australia's second-largest airline hub

Australia's Qantas is to help build the country's second-biggest airport hub at Perth airport, to be operational by 2028 as part of a A$5 billion capital investment program.

It will deliver the Western Australian (WA) capital a new terminal, new runway, a new engineering hangar, multi-storey carparks, roadworks and the airport’s first hotel.

It is expected to add 700 or so airline jobs at the airport.

In the interim, The current terminal 3 and 4 building will be used to serve destinations such as Auckland and Johannesburg from mid-2025.

In total, Qantas and its Group sister carrier Jetstar plan to add 4.4 million seats to and from Perth annually by the time the new terminal opens in 2031.
Perth Airport chief executive officer Jason Waters said: “This deal ... allows both Qantas and Perth Airport to realise growth plans and cements Perth as Australia’s western aviation hub ... with a dedicated terminal for Qantas Group airlines, an expanded international terminal, new runway, upgraded and expanded existing terminal 2, multistorey carparks and our first airport hotel".

Waters said the development should create 3000 new jobs during the construction period and support growth in WA’s resources and tourism sectors.

Qantas chief executive officer Vanessa Hudson said it was "the largest airport investment that the Qantas Group has ever undertaken".

"Perth will become our western hub."

She added "it will also make it easier for overseas tourists to connect to more destinations across Australia and create an estimated 700 new jobs" for pilots, crew, engineering and airport staff.

Tourism Council WA chief executive officer Evan Hall added: “Ultimately, a single airport for international and interstate visitors with easy connections to regional WA services will create a seamless transfer for visitors and enhance international tourism to Perth and regional WA.”
