Spain fines budget carriers

Some European budget airlines face fines totalling EUR150 million by the Spanish government for policies that include charging passengers extra for cabin luggage.

Carriers easyJet, Ryanair, Vueling and Volotea faced a consumer affairs investigation and have been told to stop charging for cabin luggage as well as fees to reserve adjacent seats for children and other dependents.

The Spanish Airline Association (ALA), which represents the airlines, called the fines “disproportionate” and said airlines can appeal.

The government investigation also considered "a lack of transparency" over the final price of services when booking on line and blocking cash payments for added services at airports.
