Six UK airports reintroduce 100ml hand luggage liquid limits

UK airport restrictions on carrying liquids over 100ml in hand luggage have been reintroduced at Newcastle, Leeds Bradford, London City, Aberdeen, Southend and Teesside airports, despite having Next Generation Security Checkpoints (NGSC) in operation.

The Department for Transport said reintroducing restrictions would "enable further improvements to be made to the new checkpoint systems" and was not in response to a threat.

Transport secretary Mark Harper said it was a temporary measure and "we’ll set out when it can be reversed in due course”.

Some airports face supply chain issues and major construction work to install the scanners.

The new x-ray machines, similar to CT scanners used in hospitals, are very heavy and in some instances, floors need to be reinforced.
