European plane maker Airbus is believed to want to take over all or part of the operations of four Spirit AeroSystems plants as part of an impending deal with US plane maker Boeing that splits the US-based aerostructures maker with Airbus's US rival.

The two plants that are of most interest to Airbus are Kinston, North Carolina (where part of the A350 fuselage is made) and the Belfast, Northern Ireland plant that makes carbon wings for the A220.
