Russia limits Swiss over-flight rights

Following the resolution of a long-running over-flight dispute between the Russian government and Germany's Lufthansa a few years ago, the Russians now have applied similar restrictions to Lufthansa subsidiary Swiss.

The Russian ban has forced the airline to take a longer route around Russian territory en route to Asia, although most recently, Swiss struck a deal with Moscow that allows it to use Russian airspace for one of the affected Asian-bound flights.

European commentators say Moscow may be setting Swiss up to declare it a German carrier and therefore subject to the same bilaterals as Lufthansa.
