Catering companies that supply in-flight meals have been accused of putting passengers at risk through poor hygiene standards.

Reports say US health officials have found dirty kitchens, workers with poor hygiene, plus rats, flies and cockroaches in food preparation areas.

One report said catering companies used unclean equipment, kept kitchens at higher-than-safe temperatures and posed a major food poisoning risk to those who ate their food.
