Protection charge rise slashes UK fund debt

The rise in the charge for UK consumer protection on package holidays - from GBP1 to GBP2.50 last year - cut almost £15 million from the debt of the Air Travel Trust fund (ATOL).

The fund remained almost GBP32 million in debt at the end of March.

The Department for Transport now is considering widening the scheme.
