Ryanair shares in Aer Lingus safe - for now

A European Union court has ruled antitrust regulators were right to block Irish budget carrier Ryanair's 2007 bid for rival Aer Lingus and also correct not to force Ryanair to sell the 29.8 per cent stake it holds in Aer Lingus.

Aer Lingus still is demanding Ryanair offload its shares and says it will consider an appeal to the EU's highest court. Ryanair's shareholding permits it to influence board decisions at its rival.

Meanwhile, Aer Lingus passenger numbers in June were 941,000, a fall of 8.6 per cent compared with the same month last year.
