The European Commission has launched a formal investigation into German carrier Lufthansa's planned takeover of ailing Austrian Airlines, saying it has doubts about the price.

“The Commission expresses doubts that the price to be paid by Lufthansa reflects the market price for what is being sold,” it said in a statement.


Austrian state holding company and key AUA shareholder OeIAG days ago warned that a failed deal with Lufthansa could lead to the airline's insolvency.
