2009 meeting totals were higher - IAPCO

Members of The International Association of Professional Congress Organisers (IAPCO) have reported the total number of meetings handled in 2009 was 5641, an increase of nine per cent over 2008.

Other findings in the annual survey included: Association meetings increased  by 15 per cent, government meetings by 46 per cent and corporate meetings by just two per cent, reflecting a 46 per cent drop in the international corporate market.

The total number of participants rose from 1968519 to 2117915.

Members surveyed in late 2008 believed 2009 would be impacted by the global financial crisis resulting in fewer meetings, but generally member companies experienced little dramatic downturn in conference outcomes through the tough year.

“Of course there were challenges for our members during the economic downturn in 2009,” said IAPCO president Philippe Fournier, “However, well trained resources and the constant drive to maintain and develop quality had a positive impact on results.”
