Chile's Lan has turned in an operating profit of US$536.18 million for 2008 on revenues of US$4.534 billion, up from US$413.37 million and US$3.524 billion a year previously.

ACCC blocks Air Canada plan

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has blocked the proposed Air Canada-Air New Zealand co-operation agreement on the Sydney-Vancouver route saying it feared such a deal would reduce competition between Air New Zealand's indirect flights between Australia and Canada and Air Canada's daily services between Sydney and Vancouver.

Delta reports lower cargo revenues

US carrier Delta says its Q4 2008 cargo revenue fell 24 per cent, due primarily to reductions in new subsidiary Northwest's freighter capacity. Other revenue increased 17 per cent, equal to around US$121 million, mainly because of higher revenue from baggage fees. The carrier says it expects to turn a profit this year despite a difficult economy.

Media reports in France say the French government will tell banks to lend EUR5 billion to airlines to help them with aircraft purchases. Airbus chief executive Tom Enders has warned 2009 will be "challenging".

“As a mark of how the competition has evolved to reflect the enormous changes that have been seen in the supply chain since 1989, this year marked the debut of the Environment Award, which will go forward to mark the continuing interest and commitment of freight forwarders in this area.

“This year, 34 finalists vied for the nine category trophies and the standard of the entrants was again extremely high. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the winners and those who reached the final stage of the competition. Thank you to all the sponsors who continue to support the awards and enable us to produce a worthy celebration of the winners’ efforts.”

One of the highlights of the lunch was the Special Award presented to Peter Collins, founder of PFE Express Limited, who has been serving the industry for over 50 years.
