Ethiopian leases two 747-200s

Ethiopian Airlines has leased two Boeing 747-200 freighters from Kentucky, US-based South Air to take advantage of increasing demand for flower exports. One was delivered in the past week and the second is scheduled for arrival end December.

Singapore's Changi Airport reports a record 4,300 weekly scheduled flights in its Northern Winter season which began 28 October. This is an increase of more than 100 weekly flights compared to the Northern Summer season from 25 March 2007 to 27 October 2007.

Air France-KLM closer to China

Air France Cargo ceo Marc Boudier says Air France-KLM wants to launch a new Chinese cargo company in 2008 which will absorb China Southern’s cargo business. The Europeans will own 49 per cent of the jv company. The new company will use existing China Southern capacity. China Southern recently joined Air France-KLM in the Skyteam airline alliance. -JH

FedEx lowers forecast

FedEx has lowered its full-year earnings estimate to US$6.40-6.70 per share from its previous market guidance of US$6.70-7.10. FedEx said the cut was due in part to fuel costs rising eight per cent to US$85 million and weaker shipping volume.

BAWC expands Perishables Handling Centre at Heathrow

British Airways World Cargo (BAWC) will invest GBP850,000 to expand its Perishables Handling Centre (PHC) at London Heathrow. The new facility will add an extra 215.97 sq.mtrs (2325sq ft) and will include a new Border Inspection Post (BIP) facility for non-human-consumption products of animal origin. Work is underway and is expected to be completed by February 2008.

FIATA slams US scanning move
