Japanese forwarders agree US$47m fines

The US Justice Department says six Japanese freight forwarding companies have agreed to plead guilty and pay nearly US$47 million for conspiring to fix fees charged for shipping air cargo from Japan to the US.

The three airports owned and operated by Queensland Airports Limited (QAL) at Gold Coast, Townsville and Mount Isa in Australia’s north collectively recorded more than 588,500 passenger movements for the month of August, a fall of 5.3 per cent for the QAL Group over the same period last year.

Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific Airways says it expects to see double-digit declines in Asia's total air cargo volume this year, with coo Ivan Chu saying he doesn't expect to see the traditional peak shipment season in the fourth quarter because of global weaknesses.

PAL employees strike ahead of outsourcing move

Philippine Airlines (PAL) suffered a strike this week ahead of outsourcing non-core businesses from October 1, a move expected to lead to 2,400 fewer jobs and cost the airline about US$57 million, offset by savings of between US$10 million and US$15 million a year.

UAE-based Etihad Crystal Cargo has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with WCA, the independent freight forwarder group that has about 4,000 member offices in 640 or so cities and ports worldwide, enabling WCA members to access Etihad Crystal Cargo's global network of 84 destinations.
