India's Air India is to upgrade its Frankfurt, Germany facilities to European hub status and downgrade UK London Heathrow services to a terminating point. Frankfurt then will provide connections for cargo and passengers en route to North America.

Expeditors down again in January

Seattle, USA-based Expeditors International has reported a 32 per cent drop in airfreight tonnage for January, after a 24 per cent plunge in December. Airfreight dropped more than the firm’s ocean cargo, which was down 13 per cent in December and 18 per cent in January.

Shenzhen to Chongqing

China’s Shenzhen Airlines has signed an agreement with the Chongqing municipal government to construct a logistics hub for western China and also is expected to establish a branch company for its Jade Cargo International subsidiary there. The carrier will utilise reconfigured B737 freighters on international routes from the city from July.

Fuel prices rising

Indian carriers Kingfisher and Jet are applying fuel surcharges after India’s state-run fuel companies increased aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices by 6.7 per cent – the third increase in a month. April ATF spot prices already have risen by about 23 per cent in Singapore, 19 per cent on the US Gulf Coast, 17 per cent in New York and 15 per cent in Amsterdam.

US screening law in doubt

US legislation passed in 2007 that requires 100 per cent air cargo pre-screening by August 2010 achieved its interim milestone of 50 per cent screening (of mainly loose cargo on US narrow-body aircraft using predominantly passenger luggage screening systems) in February this year, but Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials now say they don’t expect to achieve 100 per cent success. The TSA is responsible for implementing the system.
