DHL Global Forwarding says it trusts its customers more than government and as a result, it expects global air and sea shipping volume to drop 20 per cent early in 2009 and by 10 per cent for the full year ahead of an upturn in 2010.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has accused Europe’s Air France Group, Martinair Holland and Cargolux International of participating in alleged cargo price fixing. The ACCC already has sued Singapore Airlines, Qantas Airways and British Airways over the same allegations.

Austrian Airlines could become insolvent if a planned takeover by Germany’s Lufthansa falls through, according to Austrian’s state-owned parent, OeIAG.  Its ceo, Peter Michaelis, said the company is "fighting hard to avoid drifting towards insolvency. . .However, I cannot rule out that possibility."

Europe’s Air France group has reported a drop of 23.3 per cent in underlying cargo traffic in January, accompanied by a 10.4 cut in capacity and a drop in load factor down nine points to 53.5 per cent. Cargo traffic also fell in December – by 20.4 per cent.
