Starting with an open skies cargo agreement, India is in talks with the European Union (EU) seeking a single-entity civil aviation agreement instead of individual agreements with each EU member, which is the case at present. The EU is believed to be keen on such an agreement as it is India's biggest trade partner.

Evidence of shipping's carbon footprint is growing by the day. Inventory of air pollution connected to the Unified Port of San Diego, USA shows ocean-going vessels accounted for most of the nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide and particle emissions last year. Ships also produced more greenhouse gases, which contribute to global warming, than any other port-related sector.

Korean Air plans a joint venture with Shanghai-listed Sinotrans Air Transportation Development, two other Republic of Korea companies and Dongli Economic Investment Development Co of Shanghai to construct and operate an airfreight yard at Tianjin Airport, north-east China. The joint venture will engage in loading and unloading, bonded warehousing, office and warehouse renting, parking and other airfreight transport related services. Construction is expected to start in the first half of 2008 and be completed in the second half of 2009. -JH
