China is to have another cargo airline, Northeast Airlines, operating domestic passenger and cargo services with an A319 and two EMB-145 aircraft. It's a joint venture between Sichuan Airlines and a group of investors and will be based in the northeastern Chinese city of Shenyang. Sichuan Airlines will own 33.5 per cent of the start-up, the remainder being owned by the Shenyang government and two local companies.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released passenger and freight traffic forecasts projecting that in 2011 the air transport industry will handle 2.75 billion passengers (620 million more passengers than in 2006) and 36 million tonnes of international freight (7.5 million tonnes more than in 2006).

New air cargo terminal for SAS Cargo

A new agreement doubling Spirit Air Cargo Handling (SACH) capacity at Arlanda Airport, Stockholm, Sweden has been signed by Nordic Airport Properties. The deal will see the building of a new 15,000 sqare metre air cargo terminal at the airport by 2010.

Kuehne + Nagel sales, margins up

Kuehne + Nagel says sales grew 15.7 per cent to GBP6.5bn for the first nine months of the year and operating profit (EBITDA) rose 16 per cent to GBP297m. Margins improved to 5.0 per cent thanks to productivity increases and enhanced production flexibility.

Fedex adds Manchester

FedEx now flies direct between Manchester in England and Memphis, Tennessee, USA four times a week on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Flights originate at FedEx's European hub in Paris and they are the third to serve the transatlantic route from the UK. Fedex already flies from Stansted in the south east of England to Newark and Memphis in the US.

Air India Cargo is to convert six B737-200 passenger aircraft to cargo and lease them to India Post and the logistics firm Gati. Its first A-310 freighter aircraft has already started operations to the Gulf and Europe. Air India Cargo plans a freighter fleet of at least 10 aircraft by the end of the current Indian financial year.

Lufthansa Cargo to increase freighter services to Seoul

Lufthansa Cargo is to increase freighter frequencies to Seoul, South Korea and launch freighter services to Mexico City. The new route comes on stream in January 2008 in the winter flight schedules. At the start of winter services on 28 October, the carrier also is increasing freighter frequencies to New York and Chicago.

Ships produce more carbon dioxide

International Maritime Organisation reports that shipping’s carbon dioxide levels are similar to the airfreight sector have been queried by maritime body Intertanko, which says it believes the pollution ratio shipping:aircargo is now 2:1.
It says growth in global trade and the fact that ships are burning more fuel to deliver freight faster both have contributed to increases.
