Cargolux gains high-level Vietnam rights

Europe's Cargolux will launch services from Luxembourg to Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City from October 29. The airline has been granted top commercial rights by the Vietnam government to transport goods not only from Luxembourg but also Dubai, Dammam, Hong Kong, Bangkok and Sharjah to Vietnam and return.

BAWC strengthens India team

British Airways World Cargo (BAWC) has appointed Tarun Minocha customer service manager north and east India and Nepal, and appointed Ankush Chawla commercial manager central India, with immediate effect. Minocha and Chawla will report to Mat Burton, area manager India and Nepal.

Coleman previously was with MASkargo in Brisbane and he replaces Trisha Bethany who moved to Melbourne to work with Cathay Pacific Cargo. Craig Howard has joined CT Freight, Perth. Howard previously was with SAA Cargo, Perth.

UK govt opens door for cargo taxes

UK commentators say chancellor Alistair Darling has opened the door for higher airfreight charges by announcing UK air taxes will switch from passengers to airlines. From November 2009, departure charges will be levied on the plane, not the passenger. At present, passengers pay a range of taxes - GBP10 for an economy internal or short-haul flight; GBP20 for business class; GBP40 for an economy long-haul flight or GBP80 for business class. The new plan, said to be worth only GBP500m a year to the government, acknowledges that aircraft pollute whether or not the seat flies empty.

KE Sydney to handle freight sales for MEL flights

Korean Air (KE) will operate scheduled A330 services from Melbourne direct to Incheon, Korea from October 23. Cargo sales and reservations will be handled by KE Sydney (tel: 02 9313 4188 or fax: 02 9313 5289). Forwarders have been asked to contact KE, which is offering special incentive rate deals to Korea, Japan, China and beyond on the KE818 services.
