Britain's largest organic food body, the Soil Association, will continue to approve organic products sent by air freight as long as the sales help poor farmers. The association was in the headlines recently when it considered refusing to certify products flown from African nations and others, threatening entire industries' livelihoods. The group's concern had been centred on high carbon emissions from aircraft carrying the products.
On the same topic, the UK's Fresh Produce Consortium ceo Nigel Jenney commented that the produce industry accounted for no more than three per cent of the UK’s carbon footprint. He said most airfreighted produce was flown on passenger airlines, which would fly anyway.
