Air France-KLM makes an offer for Alitalia

Air France-KLM has made a non-binding offer for beleaguered Italian carrier Alitalia, which is losing about 1 million euros (AU$1.66 million) a day.
Buyers have been thin on the ground since the Italian government put its 49.9 per cent stake up for sale. Among other parties that had previously expressed an interest in Alitalia, only Italian low-cost carrier Air One is now expected to make a non-binding offer.

Staff exodus won’t affect service levels -Menzies

Just days after Qantas pled guilty to charges that it illegally inflated air-cargo prices and agreed to a US$61 million fine to be paid to US authorities, Korean Air has launched legal action in Australia to stop the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) obtaining documents from it that relate to ACCC investigations into alleged price-fixing by international airlines.

Fewer splash out on Xmas spending -DHL survey

Rising rents and interest rates are conjuring up the ghost of Scrooge, as people find themselves less able to splurge this Christmas, according to a survey by express and logistics operator DHL. The poll of almost 600 customers showed that spending on Christmas is well down on last year with just 44 per cent willing to splash out on an expensive gift for loved ones, compared to 56 per cent the previous year.

India to float Air India

India intends to sell up to 15 per cent of state-owned airline Air India by going public next year. Air India merged last year with its state-run domestic sister Indian. "The government is looking to divest up to 15 per cent in the second half of 2008," Civil Aviation minister Praful Patel said, adding that the airline needs funding for new aircraft. The airline currently has an equity base of 1.45 billion rupees (US$36.8 million).
